Buying Sculpture As An Investment
Art has long been a favourite way of investing money in something that should gain in value. For centuries art lovers have speculated on new artists, or bought works of art created by fashionable or famous artists. Although traditionally most art investors are inclined to buy paintings, sculpture is another artistic genre favoured by those with money to spend. Consequently sculptures for sale can be found everywhere from auction houses to garden centres.
The price you can expect to pay for any sculpture for sale will very much depend upon the artist’s reputation and popularity. As with an artist who paints pictures in the oils, the unknown sculptor will command a far lower fee than someone who has a following in the artistic community. Buying sculptures for sale by lesser known sculptors is therefore provides investors with a greater risk of their purchase not increasing in value, and the greater potential to earn large sums of money should the sculptor become famous and well sought after in the future.
Some guidelines for purchase
When purchasing sculpture for sale, one thing you must take notice of is the subject matter of the sculpture. As with paintings, one of the main things that can drive up the price of any work of art is the subject of the sculpture. Time honoured themes such as animals; people or even mythical creatures are popular and should give you at least your original purchase price back. There is also a large market for abstract art which means sculptures that fall into this genre should also be a safe bet. If you are buying a sculpture as an investment, avoid current trends or fashionable subject areas as these stand a far greater possibility of devaluing in the future.
Another aspect of sculpture for sale that you should consider is the material in which it is made. Some sculpture materials are more durable than others. If you purchase a sculpture in bronze and take care of it, you can expect it to remain in pristine condition. This means that even if you choose to sell it many years after you buy it, the sculpture shouldn’t have lost any financial value due to wear and tear. Plaster sculpture on the other hand is far more fragile and is more prone to damage.
Materials and more
The material in which the sculpture is created is one thing you must take into consideration when deciding where to place the piece in your home. There are some sculptures that are suitable to place outside and which will age but not incur much damage from the weather, whereas other materials are far more sensitive to rain or sunshine. However, if a copper garden sculpture for sale catches your eye, it’s more than possible that the effects of the weather will actually increase its value rather than decrease it.
If you enjoy art, and want to invest money in it, don’t just feel restricted to works of art to hang on the wall. Consider the sculptures for sale on the market, you might be surprised at how a unique sculpture can enhance you home – as well as create an investment opportunity.
